Homeowner Spotlight: Green Eco Solutions Helped My Mother
Kelly McSoren-Carlin is the daughter of homeowner Rose M. Carlin. Read her mother’s story at our blog titled “Quality Living”.
My name is Kelly McSoren-Carlin and my mother was a customer of Green Eco Solutions from 1990 until she moved to assisted living in 2015. During those years the company did a lot of work on her house. I remember her asking me to review the energy audit they did. It showed she was losing so much heat through the old windows and doors, the lack of insulation in the basement, and the really terrible insulation in the attic.
With her fixed income they helped her plan each job starting with the most important, the roof. It had a leak in one corner that rotted the wood and destroyed the attic insulation. Me and my husband were always worried about her and that old house that needed so much. Other than sending money we couldn’t do much because we live halfway across country. I think my husband spoke with the company more often than Mom did because he wanted to know who they were and what products would be used.
After the new roof and attic insulation I think was the basement. They used an insulating product that sealed out moisture and cold from the rest of the house. Between the roof and basement jobs it made a big difference in the oil bills. The company wrapped the pipes and water heater and installed a special attic cover over the hatch. I don’t remember if the windows were replaced before the siding, but each time we visited there were more improvements, and every one of them lowered the bills.
By 2014 there were signs that it wasn’t safe for Mom to continue living alone. We had a landscaper take care of the lawn but she wasn’t comfortable allowing strangers inside. She tried to keep up with the housekeeping and grocery shopping herself and really couldn’t. Then she fell getting out of the tub and forgot something in the oven that filled the house with smoke. It was heartbreaking having to discuss living arrangements. Mom said “I finally have the comfortable house I always wanted and you think I should move.” She refused to “be a burden” to anyone in the family and eventually chose a senior care facility where one of her former neighbors also lives.
When we called a realtor about selling her house, it was a huge relief to hear that all of the important improvements were complete. My husband wanted to have the bathroom updated but the realtor said not to worry about it because buyers want their style, not yours. We couldn’t find any paperwork about the improvements so we called Green Eco to explain. The company emailed all the documents and reminded us that everything was covered by their transferable lifetime warranty. The realtor said transferable warranties are really big with buyers, and he was right. The house sold in under four months at just below asking price. We were so happy that we sent a thank you card to Green Eco for taking care of Mom’s house all those years. When we agreed to share our story for their website, my husband said “That company could end up servicing the house for 50 years or more.”
